Despite turning the ball over 21 times in the first round of the Bill Gibbs Memorial in Haskell, the Bauxite Lady Miners came away with a 49-37 victory over the Mt. Vernon/Enola Lady Warhawks on Tuesday. With the win, Bauxite matches up with Jessieville, which beat Mt. Ida 60-26 on Monday.
Bauxite went up 8-0 with 5:30 left in the first after senior Joscelyn Rogers’ 3-pointer before the Warhawks responded with a 6-0 run. But the Lady Miners responded when Rogers hit another three to start a 10-0 run capped by sophomore Daniele Singleton’s bucket with 24 seconds left to lead 18-9 after one.
The two teams played about even in the second quarter, but the Miners finished strong when freshman Daikerria Strong hit a 5-foot jumper and picked up a steal and layup for the 26-16 lead at the half.
