The Bryant Hornets won their second straight game on Tuesday, taking down the Fort Smith Southside Mavericks 54-42 in 7A Central Conference play in Bryant. The win gives the Hornets a 13-7 record overall, and pushed them into a tie for third in the Central at 4-3.
“We were just kind of feeling our way through the game,” Bryant Coach Mike Abrahamson said. “We weren’t exactly sure what they were going to do offensively and defensively.”
Offensively for the Hornets, it was all senior Sam Chumley in the first quarter. Southside’s Ike Moore opened the game with a three but Chumley would respond with a 10-0 run by himself as he had a 3-pointer to tie things up and would get an offensive rebound and put back, another three assisted by junior Rodney Lambert and two free throws for the 10-3 lead with 3:55 left.
Chumley wasn’t done scoring as he hit another three assisted by senior Deron Canada and Canada would cap the scoring in the quarter with an offensive rebound and put back. Bryant led 15-12 after one.
“Khalen (Robinson) picks up a quick foul and we don’t want him to pick up two quick ones so we take him out,” Abrahamson said. “Sam Chumley shot the ball really well to keep us going early.”
Chumley scored 13 of the Hornets’ 15 points in that first quarter, ending the game with 17.
The Hornets return home on Friday to take on the Northside Grizzlies at the Hornet’s Nest.
