Miners top Cards at last tick

The Bauxite Miners (1-0) and Harmony Grove Cardinals (0-1) began their 2015 campaigns on the hardcourt with a bang Tuesday night. With 2.2-seconds remaining in regulation and the score tied at 48-48, the Miners shocked the entire Fred Dawson Gymnasium with an in-bounds assist from Jacob Stroud to Cooper Wright under the basket for the win.
“We knew they were coming out and switching in their man defense and we knew with 2 seconds left that we weren’t going to get much look,” said Bauxite Head Coach Andy Brakebill. “I thought maybe we could get a throw to the backside that would get us a look and it worked out.”
The unlikely finish came after both teams stalled play with back-to-back timeouts.
“We were switching and playing safety and our safety wasn’t in the right spot,” said Harmony Grove Head Coach Jeff Hogue. “We got mixed up on the switch and left a guy wide open.
“You hate to play a game that hard for a long time and then give that up at the end. Stuff happens and hopefully we can learn from that and not make that mistake again.”
