The Glen Rose Beavers (1-0) crawled away from a roller-coaster Week 1 on Saturday with a 47-36 win over cross-county rival Malvern (0-1).
After a rare postponement from Friday night due to miscommunication between officials and a 4A referee assigner, the Beavers finally suited up and opened their 2017 campaign, defeating the Leopards for the second straight year.
“That is tougher on kids than you think,” said Head Coach Mark Kehner. “They go through a normal Friday with a pep rally and pre-game meal and actually warming up and then 15 minutes before game time we are told we aren’t going to play.
“Then to come back Saturday with no school and nothing being normal and having to come out and play a pretty good football game against a pretty good football team on the road is tough.”
Despite the mixup, the Beavers put up a nice showing, especially from the quarterback slot with Jarred Rogers stealing the show.
The star wide receiver turned quarterback showed off his speed running the ball, along with his arm strength through the air, totaling five touchdowns on offense.
The senior also snatched an interception in the game, returning it 64 yards for the score.
“There was a lot of unknowns going into that without him ever playing quarterback before,” Kehner said. “He is an athlete but a lot of athletes try to play the position that aren’t successful.
“We have been waiting for him to explode and have a big game in a big moment. It was an unbelievable effort out of the young man that carried us to that W on Saturday.”
