Down 43-32 with 4:03 left in the third quarter, the Bryant Hornets' junior guard Romen Martin scored 10 points in a row for the Hornets and would take a one-point lead going into the fourth quarter in an eventual 65-56 win over the Fayetteville Bulldogs Friday in the quarterfinals of the 7A State Tournament at Cabot High School.
The Hornets hit 18 of 26 free throws in the second half and shut the Fayetteville offense down for the upset win. Fayetteville is considered a top five team in the state, No. 1 in some rankings. Martin hit four 3-pointers and led the Hornets with 22 points, while junior guard Calvin Allen had 17 points, six rebounds and six assists. Senior Kevin Hunt had 14 points and five rebounds.
The Central No. 2 seed Bryant will take on the East No. 1 seed Cabot Panthers Saturday at 8 p.m. at Cabot High School.
The Lady Hornets fell 60-26 to the North Little Rock Charging Lady Cats to end their season in the quarterfinals.
