Bryant Hornets long-distance runner Cole Watson didn’t start running until his sophomore year of high school, but what he’s done in such a short time as a Hornets’ runner has been impressive. His performance has netted him a place on the Southern Arkansas University cross country team as Watson signed a letter of intent to run on Wednesday at Bryant High School.
“Cole is not the usually story, as far as kids signing to college,” Bryant Coach Steve Oury said. “We’ve had a pretty successful middle school and junior high cross country program. A lot of the kids we’ve had that have come through and gone to college started in seventh grade, so I knew about them by the time they got on this campus. I was ready for them.
“Cole was not like that. Cole did not run until the 10th grade, so he did not have the benefit of middle school and junior high running. I had him in health class in the ninth grade, so I knew he was a good kid, and he asked me about cross country.”
Watson took it from there as he made up his mind that he wanted to run in college. Also considering University of Arkansas Little Rock and University of Central Arkansas, he liked what SAU had to offer.
