For most high school athletes, the odds of getting to play at the next level are slim to none. But for some, the dream of tackling the day-to-day grind of college sports is a miracle and a blessing.
For one former Harmony Grove Cardinal, the goal of playing Division-I basketball has finally been reached and in a unique way.
Drake Wilks, 6-6 guard, graduated from Harmony Grove in the spring of 2015 after leading his team, and the county, in scoring at 21.4 points per game.
With chances of playing college ball right out of high school, Wilks turned his attention to ELEV8 Sport Institute in Florida.
ELEV8 gives its clients the chance to mature more and better their skill level to be more ready for the college atmosphere and also helps with the recruiting process.
“It helped a lot, size-wise, and giving me another year to mature,” Wilks said. “Instead of it being at actual college and taking away a year of eligibility, I was able to go for basically another year of high school, but against some of the best competition that I have ever played against.”
