It seemed the Bauxite Lady Miners went back to their offensive sluggishness when they averaged 25.6 points per game during a three-game losing streak before beating Baptist Prep 50-23 earlier this week. On Thursday, the Lady Miners managed just 20 points in the first half and trailed 28-20 to the Nashville Lady Scrappers, but Bauxite turned it around in the second half to pick up a huge road win, 59-50, which counts toward seeding for the 7-4A District Tournament.
“It was a big win for us,” Bauxite Coach Joanna Scott said. “From the first half to the second half, we looked like two totally different teams. We were down by eight at halftime and the second half we picked up our defensive intensity. We made them turn the ball over and rush shots. That was the difference-maker. We found a little fire within ourselves and played with a lot more heart.”
The Lady Miners (13-7, 8-3 district) outscored the Lady Scrappers 20-8 in the third quarter to take a 40-36 lead going into the fourth as the offense started clicking.
“We started knocking down shots,” Scott said. “We were moving he ball well in the half-court.”
Bauxite didn’t let up in the fourth as the Lady Miners picked up the 9-point win to improve to 2-1 in games which count toward district, with a few games left to play between other teams.
The Lady Miners return to Fred Dawson Gym in Bauxite to play Lisa Academy tonight in Bauxite.
